How to Get & Stay Motivated Through Adversity

Triple V

June 1, 2023

Life is complicated for all of us, even teenagers. Whether you're facing academic struggles, uncertainties about the future, or having trouble building meaningful relationships, you're not alone. Adversity creeps up on all of us—and when it does, it's important to remember that adversity doesn't have to define us or limit our success. In fact, with the right mindset and strategies, adversity can offer us the opportunity for growth and self-discovery.

Below, we'll explore a few ways to overcome adversity so you can emerge stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to tackle whatever life throws your way.

Exercise Self-Compassion

When facing adversity, it's easy to be hard on yourself. Practice self-compassion by acknowledging your negative feelings—not dismissing or criticizing them.

A good way to reframe this negative self-talk is by slowing down and becoming more mindful. To do this, close your eyes and breathe in and out slowly, focusing only on your breath, allowing any distracting thoughts to float away.

This meditation exercise slows your breathing, lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, and relaxes your muscles, which counteracts negative self-talk and feelings.

Set Goals

Setting goals is a great way to tackle adversity. But, unfortunately, when we're facing challenges, it's easy to lose track of what we want to achieve. That's why setting clear and measurable goals is so important. They give us direction and purpose and keep us focused on the bigger picture.

Short-term goals are especially important. They help us build momentum and feel a sense of accomplishment. That boosts our confidence and makes it easier to tackle bigger challenges. So, when you set goals, ensure they're specific, measurable, and attainable. That way, you'll know what you need to do to achieve them.

Get Plenty of Sleep

When we face tough times, it's easy to neglect our physical and mental health. But prioritizing self-care can make a massive difference in how we handle difficult situations.

Start by looking at your sleep schedule. Lack of sleep can make us tired, irritable, and stressed, making it hard to cope with adversity. Try to get seven or eight hours of sleep every night and establish a regular sleep routine.

Examine Your Diet and Exercise Routines

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is also essential for maintaining good mental and physical health. Instead of reaching for processed foods and sugary snacks, which can negatively impact your mood and energy levels, try eating more fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Exercise is another important part of every self-care routine. Physical activity can boost mood, reduce stress, and improve health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week, and find activities you enjoy, whether taking a brisk walk, bike ride, or even swimming laps at your school or local gym.

Believe In Yourself

Think back on the last time you doubted yourself. You probably felt a little afraid and anxious. These feelings might have held you back from pursuing your goals. The good news is you can overcome these feelings by identifying the root cause of your self-doubt. Are there certain events or experiences that have caused you to doubt yourself?

Once you've identified the root cause, start challenging that negative self-talk. Most likely, these harmful thoughts aren't even true. Now, start focusing on your strengths: make a list of your accomplishments, talents, and positive qualities. We assure you there are many!
